"WHAT'S WITH THE SICKLE CELL CRISIS?"

Imagine having a condition where your red blood cells change their shape? How can that happen?
I know it sounds strange to you as much as it does to me. That, my reader is what we call in a scientific name SICKLE CELL ANEMIA.

The abnormal shaping of the sickled blood cells blocks the blood from flowing and this means if blood doesn't flow, then oxygen won't flow in the body. Normally, your blood cells are flexible and round, hence movement through your blood vessels is easy but with the abnormal shape, they become sticky and rigid.

This condition is an inherited disorder of the hemoglobin in your blood and it requires the inheritance of two sickle cell genes.
Can you tell if you have sickle cell anemia?
Yes you can, although the symptoms vary from person to person and change with time.

  • There are times that you can have red blood cells shortage in your body, the reason behind this is that; the sickle cells break apart easily and die leaving you without enough red blood cells. The red blood cells live up to 120 days before they need to be replaced but sickle cells usually die in 10 to 20 days. This causes fatigue and this is the disease we call anemia.
  • Some might have periodic episodes of pain. The pain can vary from a few hours to a few weeks, others can have pain crises for an year ending up in hospital beds. Pain develops when sickle-shaped red blood cells block blood flow through tiny blood vessels to your chest, abdomen and joints. Pain can also occur in your bones.
  • Painful swelling of hands and feet. This is because the blood has been blocked from flowing freely.
  • Frequent infections. You become more vulnerable to infections because the sickle cells can damage the spleen which helps your system fight infections. That's why infants are vaccinated to prevent potential infections like pneumonia.
  • Delayed growth in infants. Blood provides your body with oxygen and nutrients, and this is what we need for growth.
  • Vision problems. The sickle cells damage the retina which is the part of the eye that processes visual images.
Sickle cell anemia can lead to complications like stroke, blindness, organ damage, leg ulcers, gallstones among others.
