"FIND THE MISSING MILLIONS"
July is a month that people are called on to help raise awareness and to find the "missing millions". The reason i'm using the term missing millions is because over 300 million people are living with viral Hepatitis and the most unfortunate thing is that they are unaware.
Therefore this is the month which we come together to seek ways in which we can eliminate the viral hepatitis and urge people to go for check ups.
Once i am diagnosed with Hepatitis what should i do?
If you are found to have hepatitis you should make an appointment with a liver specialist who will do blood tests and possibly a liver ultrasound to evaluate your hepatitis B status and the health of your liver.
The importance of visiting these specialists is to make sure that they keep an eye on you or rather monitor you closely for better results, because, not everyone who tests positive for Hepatitis B will require medication.
Once diagnosed with the virus it stays in your blood and being a chronic medical condition like diabetes, it can be successfully managed if you seek medical advice.
Although living with the virus, it is important to note that you can pass the virus along to others and this is why you are advised to:
- Protect your loved ones by ensuring that all close household contacts are tested and vaccinated against Hepatitis B.
- You should avoid unprotected sex.
- You are advised not to share personal items like razors, needles, nail clippers, tooth brushes, earrings or body jewelry.
- Make sure you keep cuts and open sores covered.
- Clean all blood spills with a fresh solution of bleach and water and ensure you are using gloves.
Something to note is that Hepatitis B is not spread through casual contact, hugging, coughing, sneezing or eating food prepared by someone who is infected, or eating dinner with him or her.
People with Hepatitis B are expected to live long and live a healthy life. This can be done by making important decisions in life.
Among them is avoiding alcohol and tobacco, seeking health care from a liver specialist.
Researchers have found out that there's need for Selenium intake in Hepatitis B victims which will help reduce the risk of developing more serious liver disease.
Selenium is an essential nutrient which is necessary for a healthy liver. Selenium carries out its biological functions through Selenoproteins. The liver converts dietary Selenium to a form that can be used to make Selenoproteins.
